In order to reach the more remote Lower Austria Card (LAC) destinations to the Southwest of Vienna, we have decided to spend a “Sommerfrische” holiday in the cider region and check its public transport. We took the train from Vienna to St. Valentin, changed the train and took another bus and finally reached the Seitenstetten Abbey after 2.5 hours. The next day we visited the famous Haag Zoo.
Since my kids love the JUFA guesthouses, we stayed at the newly renovated JUFA Hochkar at an altitude of 1500 m. It had an indoor and outdoor play area including a huge sports hall and different sports facilities like a tennis and basketball court as well as running tracks, a bowling alley and a sauna area. Surprisingly we were almost alone in this big hotel and enjoyed the delicious food.
I’ve been to the Hochkar several times, but only in winter for skiing. I was thrilled of this summer pasture with that many hiking opportunities. In the Valley you take the bus MO 13 at Goestling/ Ybbs up the mountain, home to several hotels and inns as well as a climbing park. It is the ideal place to relax, because in summer there are hardly any tourists, although the mountains are so close to Vienna.
At your hotel you get the free Wilde Wunder Card, which allows you to visit most of the attractions for free: like the Mendling Valley Adventure Park, the Ybbstal saltwater pool (LAC 162), the quad chairlift (LAC 161) to the Hochkar summit or the loan of an e-bike. FreeLife offers various activities such as canyoning or rafting. Children love the Mire Adventure path and the Owl trail. On the way back we visited the Buchenberg Nature Park.
We will definitely be back!
