Burgruine AggsteinRuined Castle
Aggstein is a fascinating ruined castle in the Wachau valley. Sitting on a steep cliff on the right bank of the Danube, the castle ruins of Aggstein have been lovingly revitalized in recent years. The castle is worth a visit not just because of its breathtaking views of the Danube and the Dunkelstein forest but also for its Nibelungen exhibition, the audio tour and the restaurant.

P1020903Chivalric legends
The Kuenring family ruled here and is said to have robbed any vessel on the Danube. Many legends have grown up around the “Little Rose Garden”. The robbery knight Joerg Scheck did not only toll, but instead took hostages on the Danube and exposed prisoners to the rose garden, a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube, where they starved or jumped to their deaths.
