Since the high hills in Vienna have no more snow and the Schneeerlebniswelt in Aspern is temporarily closed, you have to look for snow fun on the mountains around Vienna. We have tested the closest ski areas and their accessibility by train and bus: Semmering and Stuhleck
In both ski areas you can take the cable car also without skis, if you just want to watch the skiers from the sun terrace of the mountain inn.
If you want to just walk in the snow and enjoy the fresh mountain air or even slide down on the excellent toboggan run with your family, just take the train at the Hauptbahnhof. After one hour you will arrive at the Semmering, where at the turn of the century Vienna’s high society and even the emperor have recovered over the weekend. From the train station it’s a 10 min. walk to get to the cable car or call a taxi.
For good skiers the ski area Stuhleck is recommended, because it is only a few km further, but it is a much larger ski resort. Snowboarders have several snow parks to choose from. For the Stuhleck, the bus is to be favored, since it still requires a bus from the train station to the chair lifts. For beginners, both areas offer a private hillside, ski school and ski rentals.
Lackenhof and Hochkar
There are other ski resorts in Lower Austria, which are a little further away: Bus zum Schnee offers Lackenhof am Oetscher and Hochkar. For groups and families, OEBB offers group tickets and the Family Vorteilscard, adults paying only 50% and children under 15 go for free. Both the bus and rail packages can be booked with or without ski pass.
