Musical comes in many forms and is available with English subtitles in Vienna. “Mary Poppins” started on 1 October 2014 at the Ronacher. At the Raimund Theater, the musical “Mamma Mia” followed Elisabeth in March 2014 and will be on this season from 11 October 2014 until 28 June 2015.
The Volksoper shows the musical “Sweeney Todd” this season. During the most successful musical weeks, four different musical productions with 32 performances are on board: “Der Zauberer von Oz” and “Hello Dolly!” are fixed for the season 2014/15.
The Vienna State Opera broadcasts selected performances live on an LED video wall just outside the opera during the months of April, May, June & September without charge. There will be several opera premieres and a line-up of international stars.
Besides the Volksoper showing also ballets and operettas, the Neue Oper Wien was established in the 1990s focusing on works from the 20th and 21st centuries. The Theater an der Wien became the latest addition to the Viennese opera scene and has joined forces with the Chamber Opera last season.
The open air opera season in Austria starts when most of the opera houses and theaters in Vienna are on summer break. One of the most famous is the Salzburg Festival. At the Bregenz Festival director Pountney will stage Mozart’s “Magic Flute” again in 2014.
Closer to Vienna is Europe’s largest Operetta Festival Moerbisch on lake Neusiedl. The Roman quarry (Roemersteinbruch) at St. Margarethen is well-known as a unique open-air opera and concert place with operas, children’s musicals and a series of outstanding concerts.
As a successor-organisation of the now-closed International Theatre Vienna, Open House Theatre Company was founded by professionals working within the performance industry as Vienna’s new English-speaking theatre company.
