The Erlebnispark Mendlingtal at Goestling/Ybbs is the only place in the middle of Europe where you can still watch lumber driving demonstrations twice a month (starting at 1.30pm). Until the 19th century the wood from this region was required for the production of charcoal, which was needed to process the iron ore from the nearby Erzberg. Every Tuesday is Children’s Day: explore the world of water with Bibi and follow the footsteps of Ferraculus.
On the Lumber Trail
The special theme trail is about two and a half kilometers long and has some signs to inform and guide you. Its starting point is the village pond in Lassing. Next to the cashier´s office, you can explore the old building that housed the journeymen blacksmiths and the original “smoke kitchen” with its open hearth. In this area are a Venetian pit saw and a chimney.
The green forest towering over the winding streams creates a wonderful wilderness. Caress the sand and stones while wading in the cool clean water. Next comes a large spring with a mill dating from the last century which is still in operation. And finally, the lumberjack camp, a mill owner´s mansion. There you can fortify yourself with good hearty fare after your hike. Right next to it is a nice children´s playground.
