The Schneeberg („Snow Mountain“) is the highest mountain in Lower Austria (2076 m) and can be clearly seen from miles away. The „Salamander“ railway takes you close to the summit in about 40 minutes and is a favourite excursion destination for families and hikers. The landscape here is unspoiled and flourishing, with the colourful Alpine meadows home to many rare plants, a host of mountain animals and beautiful panoramic mountain views.
At the mountain railway station
Austria’s highest children’s mountain adventure playground: the biggest Alpine play area (5,000 sq m) is right next to the summit station. The „Kaleidoskop“ is a world-class multimedia audiovisual experience which includes views of the Elizabeth Church opposite, the VOKA art gallery and picture exhibition. Beware of the change in the climate between 577 and 1,800m above sea level.
There are plenty of extensive and excellent hiking trails. Take the „Paradies der Blicke“ circular walk with audio guide (in 5 different languages). It lasts for about 1 hour and offers a wealth of information about the history of the Schneeberg. The Plateau Trail to the summit takes about 2 – 3 hours. Those with a sweet tooth should look for the delicious Schneeberg buns at the Baumgartner station.
